Clump-style current. It’s a vigorous grower, it blooms white flowers and shows red berries nicely.

Fir “Literati”

This Fir was collected along a high mountain lake next to a huge grouping of berries. Due to its proximity to the berries, a few came home with the tree. They make the composition in the Anderson flat come together. Simple Elegant and Fun.

Strong twin trunk needing some wiring and refinement. The initial design was placed and wire removed in the fall of 2022. This tree pushed and is strong.

Styling thoughts: shortening of long branched, branch and bud selection will move this tree near or across the finish line. The pot is filled with roots and needs to go to a new home!

Hawthorn

SOLD - This tree is well established with a split trunk and bark forming on the lower portion of the tree. The leaning base lends itself to a deciduous literati form.

Styling thoughts:

I would reference Ryan Neal’s (Bonsai Mirai) reference to designing a deciduous literati tree.

Please keep in mind the scale of this tree is far smaller than the referenced image in the video. However, principals and design decisions can be leveraged. Crataegus douglasii.

Hawthorn
36x24x16

SOLD- This tree is established in a small container already making the transition much easier to a ceramic vessel.

Design thoughts: I would look at developing this tree into a true twin-trunk display. Proper pruning, fert, and angle choices will get this tree across the finish line. Most of these trees bloom, & all show amazing fall colors. Cold-hardy and has predictable growth. Crataegus douglasii.

SOLD - This is a solid tree to build out. A nice broom style. The primary framework is established and some of the secondary is present as well. This tree can be ceramic-ready and ramified in 3 years. Most of these trees bloom, & all show amazing fall colors. Cold-hardy and has predictable growth. Crataegus douglasii.

Hawthorn “twin trunk”
32x24x24
25lbs

SOLD - This tree is a true twin trunk piece. The centermost vertical trunk is dead but left for design considerations by the new owner.

Design thoughts: I would look to push this tree forward developing the ramification and showcasing the twin trunk design to its fullest. I would reduce the center dead section and potentially carve it to enhance the age. There is bark forming and the rightmost trunk has solid ramification already starting. The leftmost branch could be shortened and compressed to round out the display. Most of these trees bloom, & all show amazing fall colors. Cold-hardy and has predictable growth. Crataegus douglasii.

Hawthorn “Clump”
36x24x24
38lbs

SOLD - What a nice clump of hawthorns. The image is compressed and beginning to ramify well.

Design thoughts: I would look to create some separation on many of the trunks by simply inserting appropriately sized sections of straight copper wire to push the trunks apart. This will open the image and allow the viewer an easier time to see the composition. The tree should be fully ramified and ready for its ceramic container within (approx. 2-3 years).

This tall healthy tree is ready to have its initial design placed.

Styling thoughts: My initial attraction to this tree is the diameter of the trunk. I would lower the tree via cutback and a new apex at the second set of branches. I would carve the top after the removal is done. Another thought would be to air-layer the top 2/3rds of the tree and then perform the work I stated above.

Western juniper “snake tree” $2000 - On Hold Deposit

This powerful little tree has a solid muscular live vein that runs from base to apex. The deadwood balances out the image in contrast, showcasing the tree's actual age. As if those features weren’t enough the foliage is tight, compact, and ramifies well into a shimpaku-like density. This tree will not take much effort to become “finished”.

Western Juniper
30x40x40
75lbs

$1500 - HOLD

Split trunk, tight foliage, compact branching. This tree needs a bit of root reduction that I would estimate takes 2 years to get into bonsai container size. In the meantime, the branching can be set and pads defined for a quick

Western Juniper
18x44x20
46lbs

$2500 - HOLD

This powerful compact tree had the original apex torn away long ago. The lowest and only remaining branch sustained this tree allowing it to recover. When the tree recovered and compartmentalized the wound, the live vein swelled and contrasts very well against the deadwood feature.

Styling thoughts: In my mind, this lower branch gets cut back and utilized as a defining branch. The end of that branch gets worked into a jin. The real magic of this tree is the base, deadwood and tight apex foliage.

Western Juniper
32x24x24
42lbs

ON HOLD

This tree has the makings of a nice literati. The deadwood ribbon runs from base to apex twisting its way through the tree. The apex has a preserved jin feature (ten-jin) and the foliage drops into the negative space under the deadwood right where I would want it.

Design thoughts: I would clean and reduce the ten-jin area and lay out the foliage cleanly rebuilding the pads in a simple apex in the negative space of the trunk. I think this tree has multiple fronts as well depending on how large you pad out the foliage.

Western Juniper

SOLD

What a monster. This tree was over 200 lbs when it came off the mountain. There’s a photo of it on my back in the photo gallery. All that aside, this tree is incredible. The play of live vein and deadwood twists and turns through the whole tree.

Styling thoughts: This tree just needs to be compressed into pads. The deadwood is so integrated with the live veins that it would be very easy to create a solid design.

Western Juniper
36x36x32

The crazy ribbon of deadwood at the base along with the surface roots gives a feeling of age. This tree is folded onto itself and has a nice chunk of deadwood right in the heart of the tree at the base. Very interesting.

In the region we collect these Western Junipers, we get a foliage that is very similar to juniper chinensis. It ramifies well and is soft as well as cloud like. This tree was initially styled on 12.28.23.

Styling thoughts: This tree needs additional compression over the rugged split trunk. The idea behind the bends you see in the photos was to push the foliage down and frame the deadwood on the trunk. I would continue to compress the image framing the strong trunk, deadwood play.

Western Juniper
32x32x32
62lbs

SOLD

This was once a large tree that was broken down from snow and wind. The original trunk was as wide as what you see in the first image, but as you can see it split and the live vein did as well. Some time ago the live vein on the left dies, but it is still connected just below the soil. The foliage on the right is strong and tight.

Design thoughts: I would reduce the deadwood trunk on the left and compress the elongated foliage from the right trunk back down to frame the stump that is created. I would also do the same with the other foliage to generate the apex bringing the flow of the tree back to the left from the right side. There is a long straight section of deadwood on the right trunk, and I would reduce that to a more image-appropriate size. The natural deadwood on the tree is impressive and should be the focal point in the composition.

Western Juniper - $SOLD

Raw stock, untouched material since recovery. This tree is prime for cleaning and refinement.

This is a nice stubby tree with a solid trunk and low branching. It needs cleaning of the bark to expose the live vein (coming soon). I will also work to reduce unneeded branches to showcase the line of the tree. Overall, this tree has the makings of a fine bonsai.
